Jewelry store robbed by suspected thief wearing 'Be a Good Human' sweatshirt

Police say he made off with more than 3,300 custom-designed pieces totaling nearly $100,000.

CHAMBLEE, Ga. — Police say a suspected thief failed to follow the advice on his sweatshirt to "Be a Good Human" when he robbed a Chamblee jewelry store over the weekend.

On Tuesday, authorities said they arrested Shanel Alexander Brown in connection with the crime.

The suspect allegedly broke into the Ringcrush Jewelry warehouse Saturday night and made off with nearly thousands of items. 11Alive's Kaitlyn Ross spoke to the store's owner, who contacted us after the theft. She told us the theft hit the small business hard.

Bailey Lehrer said her team is still trying to figure out everything the thief stole. But so far it's $100,000 worth of jewelry. In some cases, Lehrer said the suspect removed entire sections of jewelry on display, rolled it up, and put it in his pocket. In other cases, he would just take the bag.

There is a silver lining - Lehrer said she is thankful that the thief didn't clean them out, and didn't seem to know what he was looking for.

"We're wondering if some things were more sparkly than other things," he explained.

Lehrer said the suspect left their laptops and the cash box, but took some jewelry that wasn't worth much at all.

"We think he thought these were real gold," she said, pointing out some of the pieces left behind. "He stole a lot of these, which were 50 cent CZ earrings."

Police said the thief broke a window to get in the building ... and they think it was to use the bathroom. Surveillance video caught him go off camera and in to the loo for a good 10 minutes.

"We were thinking the headline might be, 'he broke in to our business to do his business'," Lehrer said with a laugh, explaining that they're jokingly referring to him the "poop-atrator."

"We're trying to make lemonade out of lemons here," Lehrer explained. "We're trying to keep the humor up."

She said it's either laugh or cry after the thief made off with nearly 3,300 custom-designed pieces. Each one can take up to two weeks to make, and while they are insured, she wants this guy caught.

"My main thing is, I want him to get caught so this doesn't happen to someone else," she said.

Police came out to the warehouse to try and pull fingerprints, and they were able to get some good ones.

They were also able to recover all of the stolen jewelry.
