Elections 2016: 'A moment of reckoning'

The TV ads, door knocking and campaign mailers finally come to an end on Tuesday. Here is what voters need to know on Election Day.

Less than 24 hours from now, the polls will open and voters here and around the nation will put an end to the 2016 campaign.

Until then, the candidates and parties are in full frenzy, trying to shake loose every last vote.

On Sunday, Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump made a quick stop at his first and only public rally in Minnesota, in hopes of fueling an upset win. He stopped at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport for a brief rally with an estimated 5,000 people in the Sun Country Airlines hangar.

"This is our last chance," Trump told the crowd. "We're not going to have another chance. Four years, you can forget it."

He appeared in the Twin Cities minutes after the news broke that the FBI director had concluded there's no new evidence to change its conclusion that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton would face no charges over her use of a private email server.

Clinton was in Cleveland for a rally with LeBron James on Sunday and appeared at a rally in New Hampshire later in the day with Khizr Khan, the Gold Star father of an Army captain who was killed while serving in Iraq.

"This election is a moment of reckoning," Clinton told the crowd in Manchester, N.H. "It's a choice between division and unity … what's really on the ballot is what kind of country we want for our children and grandchildren."

She'll appear in Michigan today, where Trump has narrowed the margin. President Barack Obama also will make a stop in Ann Arbor, Mich., while Trump will jet to Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire.

This morning in Rochester, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, 1st District Rep. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Tina Smith attended a DFL "get out the vote" rally at the DFL party offices. Trump's running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, will headline a rally tonight in Duluth.

Here's what you need to know to get through Election Day.

When are the polls open?

Most polling locations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. As long as you're in line by 8 p.m., you'll be allowed to cast your ballot, though get there early -- who wants to stand in line if they don't have to? Plus, there are always disputes about how much longer polling places should be kept open — check the news from Nevada over the weekend.

What if I'm not registered to vote?

No problem: In Minnesota, eligible voters can register at the polls. You'll need to bring documents that provide proof of residency, which can include a photo ID such as a driver's license, college ID or U.S. passport with current name and address. Voters also have the option of bringing a photo ID with a utility bill showing current address that is dated within 30 days of the election.

What's the Election Day forecast?

If you mean the weather, it'll be seasonably cool and sunny in the Rochester area, high 52, and nationally, the weather is supposed to be uneventful.

If you mean what's the forecast for Clinton-Trump or control of Congress, check out the political websites that have been tracking that all year. Real Clear Politics averages poll results and is a benchmark for political reporters; at 9 a.m. this morning, Clinton was up by 2 percentage points over Trump, which is also where Fox News' most recent poll has the race. Other polls, including the Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, say it's more like 4 percent.

The Five Thirty Eight website says Clinton has a 65 percent chance of winning.

According to a news release, people will be given a globe to hold while they pray. The release says, "While our country and the world will be focused on our future leaders, you are invited to gather for private prayer before or after you vote on Election Day to pray for the healing of the world."
