Methodology: To determine the most-loved company in every state, GOBankingRates reviewed the 2020 Fortune 500 list to find the top three companies in every state in terms of revenue. Companies with high revenue figures were chosen for analysis to reflect that companies loved by consumers are presumably met with demand in the marketplace and sell well. GOBankingRates then scored each company against the others in its state on (1) estimated revenue from Fortune and (2) average employee review score (out of five) from Glassdoor. Factor No. 2 was intended to reflect that well-loved companies would not be negatively viewed by the locals who work for them. The most-loved company in each state was determined to be the company with the highest score after taking into account both factors.
For the seven states with no Fortune 500 company headquarter locations and the four states with less than three, GOBankingRates looked at the 2018-19 Fortune 500 lists and Forbes’ 2016 ranking of top companies in every state by market cap to identify major companies to analyze. Revenue data for these companies was then sourced directly from their most recent 10-K reports.
Headquarters location according to Glassdoor and the number of total employees each company has according to Fortune or its most recent 10-K report were provided as supplemental data. Companies with fewer than five employee reviews on Glassdoor were omitted from consideration for the final ranking. In the case of a tie, the company with the most positive employee reviews was selected. All data was collected on and up to date as of July 1-2, 2020.
