Police Thursday identified a man who was struck and killed as he tried to cross U.S. Highway 190/Interstate 14 Wednesday in Killeen as Tariq Allen, 21.

Allen died at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center about 40 minutes after police responded to the accident at around 6:40 a.m. on U.S. 190 near Trimmier Avenue and found him lying in the roadway.

Investigators determined that he was walking north across the highway when the driver of an eastbound Dodge Journey spotted him and braked suddenly, police said Thursday.

The driver of a Jeep Patriot that was trailing the Dodge veered toward the inside lane to avoid the Journey and struck Allen as he walked across the lane, police said.
