Bunnlevel woman accused of bilking Fayetteville cancer nonprofit

A Bunnlevel woman is accused of bilking a Fayetteville cancer nonprofit by falsely claiming to live with her cancer-stricken husband, according to an arrest warrant in the Cumberland County Magistrate's Office.

Tanya Sherriee McGuire, 43, of the 500 block of Loop Road, was charged Thursday with obtaining property by false pretense and conspiracy.

In August, McGuire received the money and card from the Karen Chandler Trust Fund by saying she was living with her husband on the 800 block of Shortridge Road when they had not lived together for several years, the warrant said, "in order to scam the charity out of money."

The fund was created by friends and family of Karen Chandler, a Fayetteville musician who regularly played at local clubs. Chandler was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. She died Aug. 4, 1999.

The nonprofit provides financial support to cancer victims and their families.

McGuire's bail was set at $2,500.
