Sergeantsville Fire Co. to host head-shaving cancer charity event on Sept. 24

Did you know that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month?  If you have been in the small village of Sergeantsville, New Jersey in Hunterdon County on the last Sunday in September you may have noticed an unusual amount of bald heads.  That's when the Sergeantsville Fire Company hosts its annual St. Baldrick's Head-Shaving Event and Auction.

The Fifth Annual Event will be held on September 24th this year and Volunteer Organizer, Linda Swackhamer, is, once again, looking for volunteers to shave their heads to stand in solidarity with children in treatment who typically lose their hair and to raise much needed funding for lifesaving research.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is the largest private funder of childhood cancer research awarding more than $200 million in promising new research since 2005. For the third year in a row the local event in Sergeantsville will be funding one of those research projects.  The local event hopes to reach a memorable milestone this year by reaching a quarter of a million dollars raised in five short years.  With that goal in mind, Ms. Swackhamer is asking for even greater community support than in year's past by registering more shavees or by enticing volunteers to simply set up a fundraising page through their event and receive donations that promise hope to the more than 500,000 children currently undergoing treatment for the number one disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada.

Shavees currently registered include NJ Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, Hunterdon County Freeholder Director John Lanza and Delaware Township Mayor Charles Herman.  Also shaving will be a 16 year old young man shaving for the sixth time in memory of the little sister he lost to cancer five years ago.  This year's family friendly event will honor a four year old girl bravely battling the cancer monster.  All are encouraged to attend the event to participate in the many other activities including a DJ, lunch counter, speakers, children's activities, fire truck rides and both live and silent auctions.

Among items for the live auction scheduled at 3 p.m. will be tickets for Walt Disney World, accommodations at Sheraton Vistana Resort just outside the gates to Walt Disney World, a locally hand-crafted wooden bench, and wine tastings and many other items. Donations from generous local businesses continue to be added for both auctions.

You are urged to visit www.StBaldricks.org/events/SergeantsvilleFire 2017 to donate to this amazing foundation, to register to shave or to register to volunteer to make a difference in the life of a child.  For more information contact Linda Swackhamer at 908.303.4910 or email at gramswack@gmail.com.

Mark your calendars to join this community event as they come together on September 24, 2017 at Sergeantsville Fire House, 761 Sergeantsville Road (County Road 523), Stockton, NJ, noon to 5 p.m. to take childhood back from cancer!
