Car crash has laid up Van Dyke

PRAYERS GOING OUT: Entertainer Jerry Van Dyke (ABC's Coach and The Middle), who for years has been living on a farm near Malvern with his wife, Shirley, is in a hospital recovering from a traffic accident, said his older brother, Dick. Dick Van Dyke, also an actor, starred in The Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Bye Bye Birdie.

"Well, my brother had an unfortunate accident," Dick Van Dyke said last Tuesday on The Diane Rehm Show radio talk show, heard locally on KUAR-FM, 89.1. But before then, Jerry "had an experimental spinal treatment that didn't quite work."

Dick Van Dyke said that Jerry spent last winter at Dick's home in Malibu, Calif., trying to recover from the treatment and, while there, needed a walker. He added that a few months later, they were in Arkansas driving down the highway when his brother was involved in a traffic accident. Jerry Van Dyke suffered a broken pelvis and leg and is in the hospital and in a great deal of pain.

"The person coming the other way was texting and crossed over the line and they had a head-on," Dick Van Dyke said. "We're hoping that he will recover, but Jerry's 84, and it's just tragic that it had to happen to him."

WHAT'S COOKING: The first episode of former Arkansas Razorback Eddie Jackson's new Food Network Challenge show, BBQ Blitz, recently aired and featured a competition between three Little Rock chefs. In the end, Southern Gourmasian's Justin Patterson landed the $5,000 prize after besting Good Food's Donnie Ferneau and The Beast food truck's Gwen Jones.

RAISING HIS VOICE: Barrett Baber of Fayetteville continues on in this season of NBC's singing competition, The Voice. Baber was sought out by all four judges and chose Blake Shelton as his mentor during a recent battle round. Shelton chose him over fellow team member Dustin Christensen after the two wowed the judges and the audience with their duet of "Walking in Memphis." Meanwhile, Ozark native Celeste Betton was eliminated after competing in a duet against one of her team members under mentor Pharrell Williams in a duet of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."

A STITCH IN TIME: Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville recently acquired a work of art from the collection of the late acclaimed author, activist and former Stamps resident Maya Angelou. Maya's Quilt of Life, 1989, (acrylic on canvas and painted, dyed and pieced fabrics) is by Faith Ringgold. The piece, commissioned by Oprah Winfrey for Angelou's 61st birthday, features an image of Angelou with handwritten texts and excerpts from four of Angelou's written works.

NOT FADE AWAY: Tattoo artist Matt O'Baugh of Black Cobra Tattoos in Sherwood was one of the three finalists on Spike TV's Ink Master reality show's season finale. O'Baugh survived all 15 elimination challenges but, in the end, another was named the winner.
