HISAR: A freedom fighter, Juglal Arya, aged 97, passed away in his native Dharanwas village of the Tosham subdivision in Bhiwani on Saturday.

A freedom fighter, Juglal Arya, aged 97, passed away in his native Dharanwas village of the Tosham subdivision in Bhiwani on Saturday.

He was cremated with state honours later in the day. Tosham SDM Ravinder Kumar offered floral tributes to the late freedom fighter on behalf of the district administration.

Arya’s son Rajpal said his father had taken part in the Arya Samaj agitation against the Nizam of Hyderabad in 1938-39 and was imprisoned for six months. He was again jailed for five months during the Hindi agitation in 1957 and for 15 days during the Emergency in 1975. He also fought for the land rights of residents of Kanjhawala village in Delhi and went to jail for a month during the struggle.

Arya had contested the Assembly election from the Tosham Assembly constituency in 1962 as a Jan Sangh candidate.
