The woman who accused Virginia’s lieutenant governor of rape said Corey Maggette, a former NBA player, raped her in 1999 at Duke, according to a report in The New York Times.

Meredith Watson also said Duke officials did not investigate her charge at the time.

Duke University told The New York Times it is now investigating an allegation that a former player had raped the woman, but a school spokesman would not comment further.

Maggette, who grew up in Bellwood and graduated from Fenwick in 1998, denied the allegations in a statement to The New York Times.

“It has only been through media accounts and a statement from Meredith Watson’s lawyer that I first learned or heard of anything about these sexual assault allegations,” he said. “I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my life and I completely and categorically deny any such charge.”

Wilson said last week that she had been sexually assaulted by Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax in a “premeditated and aggressive” attack in 2000, while both were Duke undergrads. She is the second woman to accuse him of sexual assault. Fairfax denied both allegations, as reported by The Washington Post.

“I deny this latest unsubstantiated allegation,” Fairfax responded in a statement. “It is demonstrably false. I have never forced myself on anyone ever.”

Maggette played basketball at Duke during the 1998-99 season before going pro. He retired from the NBA in 2013 and now works as an analyst for Fox Sports.
