Mount Marty College Theatre and Performing Arts will welcome playwright Deborah Brevoort to Yankton March 22-23. The college is producing Brevoort’s play, “The Women of Lockerbie,” March 22-25 in Marian Auditorium.
Director of Theatre Andy Henrickson was contacted by Ms. Brevoort after the decision was made to produce her play, and is excited for the upcoming visit.
“I can count on one hand the number of times in my career the playwright has attended a performance,” he said. “When Deborah reached out to us last fall I thought this was meant to be and we needed to find a way to make this happen.”
The timing coincided with the grant process of the Yankton Area Foundation, and thanks to the foundation’s approval of the project, the wheels were put into motion.
Ms. Brevoort’s schedule includes workshops for the college program students at Federal Prison Camp Yankton Thursday morning followed by an afternoon session with Yankton High School students. On Friday, the general public is invited to attend a presentation held at 1 p.m. in the South Dining Room on the Yankton campus. The presentation will be repeated at 2 p.m. On Friday evening, a reception with Ms. Brevoort prior to the performance will be held in the Bede Art Gallery from 6:15-7:15 p.m. RSVP for the reception by emailing ahenrickson@mtmc.edu or calling 605-668-1533 by March 19. Finally, immediately following Friday’s performance, Ms. Brevoort will lead a talk-back discussion with the audience and cast members.
Brevoort, a writer of plays, musicals, operas and screenplays, currently teaches in the MFA Writing Program at Goddard College, the MFA Playwriting Program at Columbia University and the MFA Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. “The Women of Lockerbie” has enjoyed more than 500 productions in the U.S. and abroad, including productions in England, Scotland, Belarus, Australia, Ireland, Greece, Japan, Poland, Mexico and Spain. It has been translated into nine languages. The story is set seven years after the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
“The Women of Lockerbie” will be presented Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. For tickets, call 605-668-1234 from noon- 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, email mmcboxoffice@mtmc.edu or order your tickets on-line at www.mtmc.edu/boxoffice
