A walking stick cut from the Lock Gates at Queen's Dock Hull is set to go on sale at auction next week.

The rare find will go under the hammer later this month, with valuers hoping it brings in between £150 and £200.

The medium oak stick, which was gifted to the Lord Mayor of Hull in 1929, comes complete with a plaque.

On it, it reads: "Cut from Lock Gates, Queen's Dock Hull, opened 1779, closed 1930 for city improvement purposes, presented to Alderman Richardson, Lord Mayor of Hull, 1929-1930."

Queens Dock has since closed and in its place is Queens Gardens.

Construction on the dock began in October 1775 and it opened in September 1779. At the time it was built, it was the largest dock in the UK.

Originally named The Dock, it was changed to Queen's Dock in honour of a royal visit by Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert.

The dock was in use for 150 years and finally closed in 1930 before being filled in and landscaped to become the Queens Gardens we now know.

Vanya Slater, marketing manager at David Duggleby Auctioneers and Valuers, said: "The stick is made from a wood called greenheart wood.

"It's very durable and suited for use in marine environments. We know it came from a walking stick collector who passed it on to us."

The stick comes complete with a plaque that reads: "Walking stick with plaque which reads 'cut from lock gates, Queens Dock Hull, opened in 1779, closed 1930 for City Improvement Purposes, presented to Alderman Richardson, Lord Mayor of Hull, 1929-30."

The walking stick will go up for sale at a specialised maritime, scientific instruments and cameras auction alongside 167 other items, including a 19th century marine inclinometer and a cast iron model of a canon.
