UK weather forecast reveals snow, frost and ice will hit the country this weekend with Met Office issuing weather warning as temperature plunges
Temperatures this evening will drop to -4C in some parts of the country as the chill sets in
BRITS have been told to wrap up warm this weekend as temperatures drop and snow, frost and gales sweep across the country.
Ice and snow was forecast around the country with The Met Office issuing yellow alerts as the freezing weather was expected to move from the North West to the South East.
Public Health England warned people to take precautions and keep an eye on the elderly and vulnerable as temperatures plummet.
It was tipped to fall as low as -4C on exposed high ground, along with up to 2in of snow.
The North, Yorkshire, West Midlands, Scotland and Wales were all put on alert for ice.
Gritters were being sent out to spread some of the 1.5million tons of salt stockpiled by councils.
Wintry weather has gripped the UK this week and it is set to continue into a chilly weekend.
Snow could even fall as far south as Devon as the Met Office predicts there could be a sprinkling over Dartmoor.
A Met Office spokesman said: "Over the weekend temperatures are going to come down a bit, it's going to feel quite chilly particularly because of the temperatures but also because of that northerly flow that's coming in and spreading across the UK.
"We are going to have some showers, some of those will be wintry.
"At low levels we may see a little bit of hail, but at upper levels we may see some snowfall over that part.
"Those wintry showers and snowfall could extend as far as the moors in the south west.
"We will see a brief respite on Monday, temperatures are going to come back up again a little but then those chilly northerlies will come back for the rest of the week."
Saturday will see a frosty start before becoming cold and bright with wintry showers, mainly in the north and west.
It will be windy for much of the country with gales in the northeast.
The Met Office spokesman said: "There will be quite a strong north flow particularly around north west Scotland on Saturday.
"It will be breezy elsewhere but not to the extent to what we'll see in Scotland."
Dr Thomas Waite, of PHE, said: “Every winter, many die because of cold both in the home and outdoors. We urge people to look out for those at risk.”
Sunday will remain cold with wintry showers before Monday sees cloud with more persistent rain.
This week saw flooding as dozens of people were pulled from their homes in evacuations in Cumbria and a 20-year-old man died after crashing in strong winds.
In the north the Environment Agency and Lancaster City Council had more than 500 flood-related calls during Wednesday night as the bad weather gripped the UK.
