MERU, Kenya, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were killed and two others injured in a grisly road accident involving a truck and commuter minibus in Meru, eastern Kenya on Saturday.

Red Cross Central and Eastern coordinator Gitonga Mugambi said the minibus was heading to a dowry presentation ceremony in Chuka when it collided with a truck when the bus lost control while overtaking a motorcycle taxi.

"The two matatus (minibus) had been hired to ferry people to the ceremony but unfortunately were involved in an accident," Mugambi said

The tragic accident caused disruption of traffic on the busy road as Kenya Red Cross, police and fire fighters made attempts to rescue survivors and retrieve the bodies.

The injured who were also in the bus that was carrying 10 passengers were rescued and taken to hospital for medical attention.

Road accidents still continue to occur despite stringent traffic rules which were introduced by the government to help curb road carnage.

An estimated 3,000 Kenyans die in road accidents annually despite concerted efforts by the state and the private sector to promote safety on the highways, according to the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA). Enditem
