New meaning to The Big Bang Theory! Sheldon Cooper and Amy finally get intimate during Star Wars-themed episode

It was the moment Sheldon Cooper gave new meaning to The Big Bang Theory.

After more than five years of dating Amy Farrah Fowler, the science nerd finally gave in to chemistry of another kind and lost his virginity by taking her to bed on her birthday.

The couple was shown awkwardly getting into bed together, Sheldon still in a white t-shirt and Amy grabbing the covers tightly around her despite also wearing a light pink nightdress.

They were seen 'a few hours,' later with Sheldon, now shirtless, having a giant satisfied smile as he said: 'Well I enjoyed that more than I thought I would.'

The camera then widened to show Amy beside him, her hair messed up and panting heavily as she smiled: 'Me too!'

The night of passion came as Sheldon decided 'coitus' would make up for him struggling to find an ideal gift, with him earlier declaring: 'Then it's settled. Amy's birthday present will be my genitals.'

And after their night together, Sheldon told Amy he 'looks forward to your next birthday when we do it again,' to which she smiled back: 'That works for me.'

As well as overcoming his intimacy issues, the night of passion was a huge commitment for Sheldon - as it meant his missing the opening night of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in cinemas.

In fact, he initially assumed he would not even be with Amy on her birthday night, telling everyone he was skipping work to watch the original trilogy in preparation and also eating 'enough Star Wars cereal to choke a Wookie.'

Told that he could watch the movie any time, he had originally insisted: 'But someone may spoil he movie. No one can spoil Amy's birthday for me - ''Surprise! She's even older.'' No one saw that one coming.'

'Oh that's nice,' Penny quipped. 'Put that on her cake.'

It was a nighttime dream visit from Arthur Jeffries aka Professor Proton dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi that finally won him around as he discussed his dilemma.

Asked if he loved Amy, Sheldon said: 'Yes. But she knows how important Star Wars is to me.'

'Maybe you should show her how important she is to you,' Arthur stressed

'By seeing the movie she'd want me to see?' Sheldon asked pleadingly.

'Sheldon, you can see this movie whenever you want, but you only have a limited number of days that you can be with this woman. Be with her,' Arthur told him.

Sheldon was so pleased with his decision that he immediately phoned Amy to tell her: 'Professor Proton came to me in a dream dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi and convinced me I should be with you.'

'Sheldon, were you actually NOT going to be spending my birthday with me?' Amy asked, leaving Sheldon to quickly hang up rather than admit his initial plans.

Sheldon then turned to Penny and Bernadette Rostenkowski for advice on the perfect present, with them quickly dismissing his first two ideas and leaving them waiting for his third idea.

'That I have coitus with her,' he said matter-of-factly, leaving Penny so shocked she smashed her wine glass.

When they ask if he was ready for such 'a huge step,' he told them: 'Intimacy in any form has been challenging for me, but I'd like to show her how important she is, and it feels like now might be the right time.'

'Sheldon, that's so beautiful,' Penny said admiringly.

'Then it's settled. Amy's birthday present will be my genitals,' he said proudly.

Bernadette and Penny then decided to take Amy out for an early birthday treat - trying to coax her into getting a bikini wax and then watching a dirty movie so that 'if anyone has any questions about what happened or how we can answer them,' as Bernadette put it.

When they finally confessed to Amy what Sheldon was planning, she excitedly screamed 'You shut your damn mouth!' - before running down the stairs shouting: 'Let's get me waxed!'

In the run-up to his big night, Sheldon had another late night visit from Arthur, telling him he 'understands the mechanics' of sex but admitting: 'This is an important night for us …. and I'm worried that I might be overwhelmed and ruin everything.'

'Sheldon, if you're with the right person it will be OK,' he was reassured by Arthur, who had tried to stab himself with his light saber when he first realized Sheldon wanted to discuss sex.

He also got some help from Penny, who told Bernadette: 'We talked, I told him what women liked, and after he stopped giggling he seemed pretty sure of himself.'

Indeed, Sheldon - wearing a smart shirt and jacket and bringing flowers - seemed far less nervous than Amy when he finally arrived at her apartment on the big night.

When he suggested taking her out for dinner, she told him: 'I'm not really hungry right now… I thought maybe we could do presents first.'

When he said he 'should probably tell you something about this gift' she moved close to him as she replied: 'You mean before you … give it to me.'

When she confessed to knowing his plans, he asked if it was alright - and she immediately rushed in for a kiss.

'I'm sorry, but this is a litigious society I'm going to need verbal consent,' Sheldon replied, even suggesting he 'pull a quick contract off the internet,' forcing her to stop him again with kisses.

When they finally made it into bed, he asked her why she was shaking and she admitted: 'I'm just really nervous. I've been waiting for this for so long - I've built it up in my head.'

'Neither do I. But we can find out together,' he replied tenderly.

At the exact same time, Leonard Hofstadter, Raj Koothrappali, and Howard Wolowitz were where Sheldon had initially assumed he would be - watching the new Star Wars movie.

The guys gave Sheldon's unused ticket to Will, who arrived to loud booing by wearing a Star Trek outfit.

They perfectly mirrored Sheldon and Amy's conversation when discussing their own nerves about the eagerly awaited movie.

'We've been waiting so long for this,' Howard said, to which Raj added: 'We've built it up in our heads so much.'

At the end of the movie, they were seen leaning in with smiles almost identical to the post-coital ones Sheldon and Amy had, with Raj insisting: 'I don't think I can walk right now.'

'I enjoyed that more than I thought I would,' admitted Will, perfectly matching Sheldon's bedroom chat.

Despite his huge night, Sheldon had clearly not changed too much.

At the end of the episode he received another visit from Arthur, this time with him asking: 'How did it go?'

'It was amazing,' Sheldon said. 'I saw it a few days later, what a movie.'

When Arthur asked 'what about Amy,' Sheldon again missed the point as he replied: 'She liked it fine, but she doesn't have the history with the franchise that I do.'
