LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- A 21-year-old is dead and several were hurt after a multi-vehicle crash in Lynchburg Monday.

Police said officers responded to the intersection of Graves Mill Road and Old Graves Mill Road after three vehicles crashed around 6:44 a.m. July 23.

They said a pickup truck was at the Graves Mill Road intersection in the left turn lane stopped for a red light when another vehicle ran into the back of the pickup truck.

The truck was knocked through the intersection and the other vehicle veered left into the oncoming lane where it hit a third vehicle head-on.

Bystanders stopped to help the drivers of the vehicle.

Police said Dante Demarco Poindexter, 21, of Campbell County, was in the vehicle that rear-ended the truck.

Life saving measures were started on Poindexter before EMS got there, but he died from his injuries at the scene and his body was taken to the Medical Examiner's office in Roanoke.

The Altavista High School football team said Poindexter was a former player that helped them win state championships in 2013-2014.

"Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers," they wrote in their post.

The other two drivers were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said there was a fourth vehicle that approached the crash scene and veered left to avoid the crash, but hit the curb and embankment.

That driver was also taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

This investigation is ongoing and being handled by the Lynchburg Police Department’s Traffic and Safety Unit.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Officer M. D. Bauserman 434-455-6047 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-798-5900.
