TWO QUALIFY FOR STATE: Henderson’s Mark Eberhard and Mount Pleasant’s Ryan Sharp qualified for the upcoming UIL State Swimming and Diving Championships in two events apiece based on their performances at regional competition.

Eberhard will compete in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley, and Sharp will compete in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly.

Eberhard was secpmd in the 100 breaststroke at regionals with a time of 58.56 and fifth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.07. He will be seeded fifth in both events at the state meet.

Sharp is seeded eighth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.90 and 16th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.13.

The state meet is set for Feb. 14-16 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.

LOBO TENNIS: ROCKWALL – The Longview Tennis team opened the season in the 16-team Rockwall Tournament.

Simran Kortikere won girls singles, running her record this season (fall included) to 23-0.

Elliot Murphy and Connor Gilliland finished second in boys B doubles.

The Lobos will compete in the McKinney Tournament Friday and Saturday.

KC SOFTBALL DROPS 2: MARSHALL – The Kilgore College softball team dropped 10-0 and 7-0 decisions to the East Texas Baptist University JV on Saturday.

KC had two hits in the 10-0 loss, singles by Tori Tovar and Christina Herrera. Amanda White and Michaela Latham handled the pitching chores for KC.

In the 7-0 loss, Kendyl Dockter had the lone KC hit, a single. Mattie McQuary and Andrea Decareau pitched three innings apiece for the Rangers.

Kilgore (1-3) will visit McLennan for a pair of games on Wednesday and play two games at Texas College on Saturday.

The team’s next home date is Feb. 15 against Weatherford.

HEART SCREENING: Longview Regional Medical Center will host a free heart screen for East Texas youth, ages 14-18, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Feb. 23 at the hospital, 2901 N. Fourth St. The screening will take place in LRMC’s Outpatient Surgery/Surgical Service Entrance, located between the 707 and the 709 Hollybrook buildings.

The free screening, held in conjunction with Championship Hearts Foundation, includes a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and a limited two-dimensional echocardiogram (ECHO) (picture of the heart) to detect Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

The screening is open to all East Texas students who participate in athletics, cheerleading, marching band, drill team or other strenuous sports are encouraged to get their heart screened for possible deadly genetic heart conditions, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
