PANAJI: The tourism department will light up the Panaji church and the picturesque Penha de França church at Britona with LED lighting as a pilot project over the next ten days.
Tourism director Swapnil Naik said that the peak tourism period of Christmas and New Year has been chosen, as Goa is set to be swarmed by hordes of Indian tourists as well as foreigners during this time.

The purpose behind the trial is for replacing the lighting technology currently used for many religious and heritage monuments in Goa.
"Currently, churches, temples and other monuments in Goa are lit up using sodium vapour technology. It has its disadvantages: It is tough to get spares for them as they are outdated. They consume a lot of electricity, besides they only display a single colour. Sodium vapour lamps also generate tremendous heat, which could be damaging to heritage buildings," Naik said.
Phillips Lighting recently approached the tourism department, Naik said, and suggested that the old sodium vapour lamps could be replaced with LED lighting. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, and is a technology used in various forms of lighting and even electronic user interfaces such as computer and TV screens.
"The company had earlier installed the sodium vapour lamps and suggested that we could switch over to LED technology. The advantages of using LED lamps is that it consumes less electricity, has durability and a longer life span. It will also display five colours that will be changing at regular intervals. Thirdly, the spares for LED lamps are readily available," the tourism director said. "It will be lit from December 23 to January 2. We await feedback, before going ahead with our plans to upgrade lighting at all monuments in Goa," Naik said.
