Gossip Girl fans have long blamed Nathaniel Archibald for their high expectations in men – so good news for lovers of Chace Crawford – he's back on a new superhero series called The Boys.

Amazon's live-action adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic book, The Boys is set in a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame. It follows a group of vigilantes known informally as "the boys", who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than blue collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty.

According to Deadline, Crawford will join the main superhero team, The Seven, as aquatic hero The Deep.

He'll star alongside American Gothic's Antony Starr as Homelander, the leader of The Seven, and other Seven members Dominique McElligott (Queen Maeve), Jessie T Usher (A-Train) and Nathan Mitchell (Black Noir) have reportedly all signed up.

It's already been confirmed that Erin Moriarty – who appeared as Hope Shlottman in hit Netflix series Jessica Jones – has also signed on to play one of the The Boys' leads, Starlight.

The eight-episode series, created by Supernatural and Timeless's Eric Kripke, will be a Prime Original, co-produced by Sony Pictures Television Studios and directed by Superbad and Preacher duo Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen.

"In a landscape saturated with superhero shows, The Boys is the next evolution in this popular genre," said Sharon Tal Yguado, head of scripted series at Amazon Studios.

"With Eric, Evan, Seth and Original Film all behind this series, we are excited to adapt this popular comic, from the visionary minds of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, for television."

"We are very happy to have the unique opportunity to produce a second series based on the subversive and innovative world of Garth Ennis," added Chris Parnell, who's co-president of Sony Pictures Television Studios.

"And we are thankful to Sharon and her team at Amazon for their vision, partnership, and support."

The Boys is scheduled for release in 2019.
