Meanwhile, the projected second season of American Crime Story, which has been entitled The Assassination Of Gianni Versace, has been filming away in Miami.

With the Katrina season's shoot bumped to next year, 'Talks with' actors meant to be in it - names like Matthew Broderick, Annette Bening and Dennis Quaid - 'are underway' to see if their schedules can be reconciled with the switch.

On the subject of whether American Crime Story: Katrina may wind up getting scuppered altogether, Anthony said: 'Who knows. It's all up to Ryan Murphy.'

He attributed the hold-up in part to 'bird in hand syndrome,' which is to say the Versace season 'needed a lot of attention, so I think [Ryan] just made the decision to do that. Instead of do what was intended, which was doing them parallel at the same time, he chose to do them one at a time,' Anthony's explained.

Assuming the Katrina season gets made, Anthony's ability to stay on is 'all on timing. If the timing works out, great. If not, you got to sometimes unfortunately miss out on things. There's so much greatness going on - you want to do it all but you can't.'

Anthony had directed five episodes of the critically exalted American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson, about the titular media frenzy double-murder case.

Airing last year, that show wound up winning nine Emmys out of a formidable 22 nominations, its victories including the category of Outstanding Limited Series.

As The Hollywood Reporter pointed out, Ryan spoke to them last January - when Katrina was to be season two - and preened that 'I want this show to be a socially conscious, socially aware examination of different types of crime around the world.'

He held that 'in my opinion, Katrina was a f***ing crime - a crime against a lot of people who didn’t have a strong voice and we’re going to treat it as a crime.'

Gianni Versace, who launched his eponymous company in 1978, was shot dead outside his mansion in Miami Beach in on July 5, 1997 when he was 50 years old.

Eight days later, the culprit, California-born serial killer Andrew Cunanan, committed suicide by gunshot on a houseboat when he himself was 27 years of age.

After Gianni's death, his shattered younger sister Donatella - played by Penelope Cruz on the show - rose to become Versace's creative director, while Gianni and Donatella's brother Santo assumed the position of CEO.
