Woman arraigned in I-75 crash that killed worker

Detroit — A 22-year-old woman was arraigned Monday on charges related to a crash last Thursday that killed a construction worker and injured another in a work zone on northbound Interstate 75 near Warren Avenue.

Samiya Speed, of Detroit, had been released from police custody on Sunday, according to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy's office. Magistrate Bari Blake Wood of 36th District Court set bond at $50,000, 10 percent, and required Speed to wear an alcohol tether if released.

Speed, who is accused in the death of David Snell, 57, of Bay City, faces charges of operating a motor vehicle causing death, driving with a suspended license, careless driving in a work zone causing death and operating a vehicle while intoxicated-second offense.

The operating a vehicle causing death and the careless driving in a work zone charges are each punishable by up to 15 years in prison. 

Authorities said Speed allegedly was drunk and driving in a construction zone on I-75 near Warren in Detroit when she caused a collision that killed Snell and made her vehicle roll over.

She was arrested by Michigan State Police troopers at the scene.

Snell had been a heavy equipment operator for C.A. Hull Contractors in Walled Lake since 2005, co-worker Mike Malloure said last week."We're all devastated by the news ... he's been with us for a long time," Malloure said. 

Snell's son, David Arthur Snell II, posted on Facebook about his father's death.

"He was a kind, generous, and loving man," he wrote. "I ask that you keep us in your prayers and allow us the time to heal."

Speed is scheduled for a probable cause conference at 8:30 a.m. June 26 and a preliminary exam at 9 a.m. July 2, both in 36th District Court before Judge Kenneth King.
