In the wake of firing Phil Jackson, the New York Knicks team president role is now open. One person on their interview list is former Cavs GM David Griffin.

It’s the dawn of a new day for New York Knicks basketball. Gone is Phil Jackson, the triangle offense and zen. In its place is maybe James Dolan finally figuring out an actual process to building a championship or even playoff-caliber roster for a team that since the 2004-05 season has only made the playoffs three times.

Steve Mills is running the show as GM, but the president job is open. One person who will at least interview for it is former Cleveland Cavaliers GM David Griffin.

Griffin would become the Cavaliers permanent GM back in 2014. As Cavs GM he put together a team that reached the last three NBA FInals, winning one of them. Yes, having LeBron James helps, but he also traded for Kevin Love and made other impact moves like trading for JR Smith, Kyle Korver and signing Richard Jefferson, all of whom have been integral parts of the club.

For the Knicks, it would be a move that would make sense. Unlike trying to get Sam Presti away from the Oklahoma City Thunder, or Masai Ujiri from the Toronto Raptors, they wouldn’t have to give up anything to get Griffin. Just money, which MSG prints.

Whoever comes into the Knicks president role is going to have a challenge ahead, however, that challenge will be easier without giving up a first-round pick. The Knicks should be hoarding assets at this point, not giving them away.

We’ll find out more in the coming days about who else is being considered, however, if Griffin is the choice, it may not be a bad way to go.
