Health Minister’s statement absurd: IDPD

Reacting to the statement of Health Minister of Assam Himanta Biswas Sarma that cancer is caused as a result of sins committed by a person or his predecessors, the Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) termed it as totally unscientific and absurd. President Dr SS Soodan, senior vice-president Dr Arun Mitra and general secretary Dr Shakeel-Ur-Rahman said such statement that too from a health minister, who is suppose to be the custodian of people’s health, is dangerous and spreading myths and strengthening false beliefs. “Cancer is caused as a result of several factors which may be environmental, due to dietary habits, intake of carcinogenic substances or genetic outlay of a person. It is in no way a divine justice as propounded by the minister. The medical fraternity should refute such obscurantist ideas. There are several myths about healthcare in our society and such ideas from a minster further strengthen such myths and therefore must be refuted scientifically. Instead of taking steps to improve the healthcare delivery system, such statements also seem to be a deliberate attempt to escape the responsibility to provide healthcare to the people of India, who are reeling under heavy economic burden as a result of out of pocket expenditure on health,” said Dr Mitra.
