Avicii’s death aged just 28 has shocked music fans and artists alike.

The Swedish DJ was found dead in Muscat, Oman, yesterday, with his cause of death yet to be confirmed.

However, in an eerie twist, one of Avicii’s friends predicted that he could die in his twenties due to his drinking, partying and exhaustion.

Laidback Luke, real name Lucas Cornelis van Scheppingen, said that the life of a touring superstar DJ had taken its toll on the young DJ, and claimed people in his shoes can find a ‘new friend, alcohol or whichever vice helps them with feeling displaced all the time’.

In a 2016 article for Billboard, the 41-year-old said he had last been booked for Avicii’s Ushuaïa Hotel parties in Ibiza in August 2015, and wrote: ‘He [Avicii] looked terrible. He gave me a very sincere but oh-so-tired smile when he saw me.

‘Soon after, he was onstage playing his amazing music — and that’s when it dawned on me. This wonderful and talented kid might not overcome his struggles.’

Luke continued: ‘At that moment, I envisioned my friend, now 26, joining the infamous “27 club” of music and film stars who died at that age. It sounds horrible but it’s the truth, and I can’t take back the overwhelming sense of frustration I felt.’

The DJ then compared Avicii’s situation to that of Amy Winehouse.

Luke wrote his op-ed after the announcement that Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, was retiring from live touring.

Avicii made the decision as it was ‘something I had to do for my health’; the Levels musician suffered from acute pancreatitis partly due to excessive drinking, and had his appendix and gallbladder removed in 2014.

Nile Rodgers, who collaborated with Avicii in 2013, also admitted he was worried about his drinking, after saw him drunk after he promised to give up alcohol.
