On the surface, it could be said that people wear jewelry simply to help them look good in their clothing. But jewelry can do more than pull an outfit together, although the right pieces certainly do make that happen. Well-made, unique jewelry can also tell a story about what the wearer finds important, who they are and who they aspire to become. Best of all, wearing a different style of jewelry can completely change how others see you, and you can change that conception as often as your mood changes. Nothing makes a statement better than gorgeous handmade jewelry, and these Sacramento shops offer many pieces with which to express yourself.

Rainbow Bridge Jewelers
721 Sutter St.
Folsom, CA 95630
(916) 985-7618

Rainbow Bridge is tucked away in historic Old Folsom and the shop includes unique, artisan pieces not carried by the average jewelry store in a mall. Handmade necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings are available from designers both near and far. Jim Kelly's striking jewelry, exclusive to Rainbow, is made with materials like Peruvian opals, chalcedony and lavender stone. Acclaimed artist Tabra Tunoa is known for her powerful pieces that often feature semi-precious stones, talismans and sacred symbols; the shop also offers designs Tunoa created for it exclusively. Other handmade and one-of-a-kind pieces are available from artisans including Ayala Bar and Andrea Menghetti.

Article Consignment Boutique
5704 Elvas Ave.
Sacramento, CA 95819

Judging by its name, one could easily expect Article Consignment to carry only previously owned clothing and accessories. In fact, the shop also carries unique handmade jewelry from local designers such as Mortal Coil Jewelry. A collaboration of two Sacramento jewelers, Mortal Coil makes pieces that are not only created by hand; each item is one-of-a-kind. Article Consignment sells a variety of the mixed-media pieces, which can feature semiprecious stones, metals and altered art. While the duo specializes in steampunk, neo-Victorian and fantasy designs, shoppers can also find fun and funky filigreed and floral pieces.

Mea Vita
121 K St.
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 273-7748
www.facebook.com/MeaVitaSacramento

While this Old Sacramento shop sells locally created clothing, art and accessories, the handcrafted jewelry is what draws the attention of many delighted customers. Owner Aida Makarevic designs and creates the jewelry on the premises and can make custom pieces as well. Makarevic works with pure silver, semi-precious stones and other materials from six different countries to form her special pieces. Some of the gorgeous earrings, necklaces and rings are elegant and more conservative, but her artistic talents particularly shine in larger statement pieces. Customers will appreciate that the jewelry is reasonably priced, considering the fine craftsmanship and the shop's traditionally more pricey location in Old Sacramento.

Little Relics
908 21st St.
Sacramento, CA 95811
(916) 716-2319
www.littlerelics.com

Little Relics is a small boutique that features locally made artwork, sculptures, gifts, and jewelry. One way that Little Relics owner Susan Rabinovitz ensures her store has a wide selection of excellent and unique jewelry is by including some of her own handmade pieces. Rabinovitz is a talented artisan whose sense of style and whimsy is evident in the jewelry she creates. Some items are more subtle, relatively speaking, such as a set of stackable rings with alternating bands of sterling silver and hammered copper. Other pieces, like her Robot Spoon necklace, are more eclectic, made from a vintage spoon, copper and corrugated workshop nuts on a stainless steel chain. A repurposed fork, copper chain and leaf-shaped green agate are used for the Treasure Chest, another handmade necklace by Rabinovitz.
