Lauryn Hill, the ’90s hip-hop superstar, has postponed her July 5 performance at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater in Virginia Beach. The show has been moved to Aug. 16, according to an announcement by the venue. No reason was given for Hill’s postponement. Tickets for the original date will be honored at the new one.
Hill has been touring lately to commemorate the 20th anniversary of her only studio album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” which spawned modern hip-hop soul classics like “Doo Wop (That Thing),” “Ex Factor,” and “Lost One.”
The album was an immediate sensation, winning five Grammys, and eventually selling 19 million copies.
But raising her children and other issues, including a three-month stint in prison for tax evasion, took precedent over her recording career. She also became disillusioned with fame and hasn’t released a proper follow-up to “Miseducation.”
In the years since, Hill’s erratic behavior – having audiences wait for hours before she hits the stage and radically rearranging the hits fans came to hear – have been widely criticized and debated on social media.
Still, few female hip-hop artists have matched the ambitious and soulful qualities of “Miseducation,” including Hill.
