Serious Crash Critically Injures Two
Accident during rush hour shuts down major highway intersection & snarls traffic.
On Friday Nov. 28 at approximately 3:45 p.m Suffolk County Police and the Setauket Fire Department were notified of a motor vehicle crash with an overturned SUV. The accident was reported at the intersection of Route 347 & Nicolls Road. Upon arrival of Suffolk Police Fourth Precinct units it was confirmed that a three car accident had occurred, with a silver SUV overturned.
According to police, bystanders who witnessed the crash attempted to hold the car up to prevent further collapse prior to arrival of rescue personnel. Under the command of Setauket Fire Department 1st Assistant Chief Thomas Makarius, members of the fire department and Suffolk County Police Emergency Services section used hydraulic tools to remove the roof of the SUV. Four people were removed from the SUV and transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. Two of four patients were listed in critical condition at the time they there transported by Setauket EMS.
Suffolk County Police closed Route 347 & Nicolls Road in all directions for approximately three hours, while crime scene investigators tried to determine a cause of the serious crash.
