10 Great Guitarists In Terrible Bands

2. Mark Tremonti - Creed

By the time the Internet got around to making cheeky music memes, Creed were always the prime candidates to be mocked. With their more faith-tinged lyrical themes and Scott Stapp's caveman-like delivery, there was a lot to laugh at when it came to songs like "Higher" and "With Arms Wide Open." It's really a shame the band got dragged through the mud considering they had one of the greatest guitarists of the modern age at their disposal.

For as much as Stapp might drag some of these songs to a halt, Mark Tremonti is a true pro when it comes to writing some of the tastiest rock licks ever. Coming from the school of old school hard rock and metal, Tremonti really is the guitar player's guitarist, with every solo hitting at the exact right time that you want it. The band could have easily created 3 new levels of shred, but the "emotional potency?" of Stapp ended up driving sales for some reason.

Though Creed eventually folded after Weathered embarassed itself, the creation of Alter Bridge finally put Tremonti into the guitar god role he was always meant to be in. Creed can usually be enjoyed with a strong pair of nostalgia glasses on, but when it comes to Tremonti's work, this is some of the highest quality guitar playing you'll find in the '00s.
