Armed Norwalk Man Attacks Stamford Police Officer, Cops Say

The incident occurred late Friday night in Stamford.

STAMFORD, CT — A 19-year-old Norwalk man took a swing at a Stamford police officer during an incident late Friday, and cops found that the man had a loaded 9MM High-Point handgun in his possession, according to authorities.

Officers were called to Woodland Avenue in Stamford at about 11:15 p.m. Friday on a noise complaint, and found Andy Jahvaughn Lee, of Harriet Street, sleeping in his illegally parked vehicle.

"Officers were able to wake up the sole occupant after banging on the windows to the vehicle," wrote Stamford Police Capt. Diedrich Hohn and Lt. Michael Noto in a post on the department's Facebook page. "Upon seeing the Officers [Lee] started to move an object under the driver’s seat. The Officers ordered [Lee] out of the vehicle at which point a strong odor of marijuana was detected by the Officers."

Lee "quickly became combative" with the Officers, including trying to strike one of the officers. "The suspect then attempted to flee at which point he was quickly captured after a short foot pursuit."

Lee was charged with possession of a gun without a permit, weapons in the motor vehicle and interfering with Police. He is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Oct. 26 and was released after posting bond on $10,000 bail.

"The Stamford Police Department is extremely proud of the actions of Officer Ryan Lee and Robert Bossone," wrote Hohn and Noto. "Their proactive police work removed another gun off the streets of Stamford and possibly prevented more needless gun violence. This is another example of the risks the Stamford Police Officers are up against every day. We are all lucky that these Officers were vigilant in quickly recognizing a dangerous situation and rectifying it in a safe manner. The Stamford Police Department would like to recognize Ofc Lee and Bossone’s actions last night and their work every day to make the South End neighborhood and the City of Stamford safer."

Anyone with any information about illegal guns is urged to contact the Stamford Police Crime and Gun Stoppers hotline at (203) 977-TIPS. All calls are kept confidential.
