Reading's Alan Barton Passes Away

Longtime town resident served in the Navy during Korean War.

An obituary from the Douglass, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home:

Alan F. Barton, 84, a longtime resident of Reading, passed away at his home on Monday morning, June 17. He was the husband of 54 years of Mildred (Ryan) Barton.

Born and raised in Brighton, he was the son of the late William, and the late Katherine Barton. Alan enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17. He served during the Korean War, earning his Honorable Discharge in 1953.

Alan worked for a time as a driver for Greyhound Bus Lines, and as a train operator for the MBTA. Alan worked hard to support his family and make sure Mildred could be a stay at home mom. While holding down full time jobs, he also drove limousines part time for Boston area funeral homes. He enjoyed working with the many families he drove in his limousine.

Alan also worked as a Federal Police Officer with the Federal Protective Service. He was stationed in several federal buildings throughout Boston during his career. Following his retirement from law enforcement, Alan and Mildred enjoyed traveling to Bermuda and spending time on their houseboat on Lake Winnipesaukee.

In addition to his wife Mildred, Alan is also survived by one daughter, Catherine Barton Rossetti and her husband Kenneth J. Rossetti of Reading; three granddaughters, Olivia, Lilah, and Cora Rossetti; and he is also survived by Kenneth’s sister, Gina Rossetti of Chicago. Alan was preceded in death by one brother, the late William Barton, and one sister, the late Alice Barton Thornhill.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes Church, 186 Woburn St., Reading on Saturday, June 22 at 10:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be at the Douglass, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home, 25 Sanborn St. (cor. of Woburn St.) Reading on Saturday morning, prior to the Funeral Mass from 8:30-10 a.m. Burial with Military Honors will be at the Charles Lawn Cemetery in Reading.
