Miley Cyrus and Jimmy Fallon competed in the “Name That Song” challenge on Thursday’s episode of The Tonight Show.
The host explained that The Roots would start to play a song one instrument at a time. The first player to buzz in and correctly guess the song would win the round. If the player guessed incorrectly, their opponent would be able to steal the point.
The band began to play the opening notes to Joan Jett & the Blackhearts’ “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” with the piano. The drums and guitar quickly picked up, though the players struggled to guess the song.
“It can’t be what I think it is,” said Cyrus as Fallon hit his buzzer. The host accurately guessed the song and won the first round.
“We did push the button at the same time,” she said as Fallon flaunted his victory. “I pressed the button at the same time. I didn’t get to say it, but you got it out, so now it’s really on.”
The next song began with the bass, while the drums and piano soon came in. Cyrus repeatedly said that she knew it was a Bob Marley song, though Fallon buzzed in and correctly guessed the title “Could You Be Loved.”
To celebrate his second win, Fallon sang the song and proclaimed, “This is the best game ever.”
The next song was Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.” Cyrus announced that she knew the song, but couldn’t remember its name. She buzzed in and gave the correct answer after asking the audience for help.
Fallon called out Cyrus for cheating, though the two quickly made up once The Roots started to play the song and they sang the chorus together.
For the next round, Fallon incorrectly guessed that the band was playing Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke.” The Roots continued to play the song until Cyrus buzzed in and began to sing along to Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.”
Cyrus and Fallon danced along to the beat of the next song as they struggled to guess that it was the singer’s “Party in the U.S.A.” Both players seemed to realize the answer at the same time, though Cyrus buzzed in first.
“It took you that long to get that one,” said Fallon. “I wish I had a number one song they could play.”
She caught up to Fallon when she correctly guessed that the next song was “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston.
After the two sang the chorus together, Cyrus said, “We’re not good at the game cause we have to perform it for a whole other chorus after.”
Fallon announced that the person to correctly guess the final song would win the game. The song started off being played only on the piano, and the drums soon followed. Fallon quickly buzzed in and guessed that the song was “Just a Friend” by Biz Markie.
“You suck,” said Cyrus, before she joined Fallon in leading the audience as everyone sang the chorus to the song.
