Central New Mexico cities are pitching in to help mitigate the drying Rio Grande.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that some communities along the river have agreed to sell water they don’t immediately need.

That water will help boost levels and flow and even aid in protecting endangered species.

Audubon New Mexico helped initiate the agreements which will amount to more than 320 million gallons released over a two month period.

The group would not comment on the details of the transactions but said Belen, Los Lunas and Bernalillo are providing shares of unused water rights “at cost, without profit.”
