ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - Seven South Carolina lawmakers are calling for a state audit of Winthrop University in Rock Hill amid concerns the university is using its savings to balance its budget.

Democratic Rep. John King tells The Herald of Rock Hill of Rock Hill (http://bit.ly/1IMrEWu ) that he is worried because the university has dipped into its savings for several years. Earlier this year, lawmakers were told Winthrop may have to use another $2 million from savings to keep this year's budget in the black.

The newspaper reports it would be the first major review of the school's finances in about 20 years.

Board of Trustees Chairwoman Kathy Bigham says the university respects the audit process and the school will cooperate fully and answer any questions.
