DES MOINES, Iowa — A crash in Des Moines early Sunday morning left one person dead and another seriously injured.

Police responded to the intersection of 2nd Avenue and University Avenue around 2:40 a.m. on a report of a single-vehicle crash.

Authorities say a car with two people inside crashed into a traffic signal pole after the driver lost control within the intersection. After the collision, the vehicle appeared to be catching fire as both occupants were taken out of the vehicle by witnesses before emergency crews arrived.

The passenger in the vehicle, Bill Saywonson, 23, of Des Moines, died in the crash. The driver, identified as Dawood Mekonnen Nega, 24, of Cedar Rapids, was transported to the hospital and is being treated for serious injuries, according to police.

Police are investigating whether excessive speed and impaired driving contributed to the crash.
