Masked robber caught on video beating gas station worker

SUMMIT -- Police on Wednesday released a security camera video showing a masked robber beating a gray-haired service station attendant over the head with a large wrench.

The robbery occurred at the Shell station, 6 River Road, about 11 p.m. Sunday.

In the video, the worker, who appears slightly stooped over, enters his work booth and the robber follows right behind him.

As the worker moves towards a cash register, the robber raises his arm and strikes the victim from behind, swinging at him three times and the worker turns and rushes out of the booth to escape the attack.

Police said the robber first approached the victim outside the booth and demanded money. The attack occurred as the worker was attempting to comply with the robber's demand.

After the worker fled the booth, the robber grabbed cash from the register and fled on foot, running northeast on River Road, police said.

The worker called 911 and officers arrived to find the victim with a large cut across his forehead, police said. The man was taken to Morristown Medical Center for treatment of the wound.

Police aided by a Union County Sheriff's Department police dog searched the area but were unable to find the attacker.

Authorities describe the robber as a Caucasian male about five-foot, 10-inches tall, with a medium build, and wearing a dark hooded sweat shirt, green gloves and a dark bandana covering his face.

Police are asking that anyone with information about this case call the Summit police Detective Bureau at (908) 273-0051.
