Friday’s regional sports roundup: Kecoughtan product Brandon Tabb signs with Danish pro basketball team; VMI women shut out Hampton in soccer opener

PRO BASKETBALL:

Former Bethune-Cookman and Kecoughtan High standout Brandon Tabb recently signed with the Horsens IC team, which was the runner-up in Denmark’s top league.

Tabb was the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year last season.

Women’s soccer:

On a Friday of season openers, VMI won 2-0 at Hampton.

Taylor Callahan scored in the 38th minute and Sierra Brewer netted a header in the 48th for the Keydets, who outshot the Pirates 29-4 in Kevin Darcy’s Hampton coaching debut.

HU’s Maya Andrews made six saves in the first half and Rebekah Smetana made four in the second half. …

Ayan Adu scored on a free kick from the top of the box in the 74th minute to lift Virginia, ranked eighth in the preseason coaches poll, past Colgate 2-1 in Charlottesville.

Betsy Brandon put U.Va. ahead 1-0 in the 43rd minute, but Martina Loncar evened the score for the Red Raiders about two minutes later, just before the first half ended. …

Kira Laurento gave Old Dominion the lead over East Carolina six minutes into the game in Norfolk, but the Pirates tied the score early in the second half in a 1-1 tie.

Emma Gervase tapped a pass to Laurento, who blasted a shot off the fingertips of ECU goalkeeper Melanie Stiles to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.

In the 14th minute, ECU’s Kim Sanford earned a red card for taking down Iris Achterhof, so the Pirates were a player down for the final 76 minutes.

In the 47th minute, though ECU tied the score as Daria Draovitch lofted a cross to Tori Riggs, who lifted a header into the top corner of the goal.

The Monarchs outshot ECU 6-1 in overtime, but only one shot was on net, and Stiles stopped it. …

Virginia Tech had numerous chances in the second half and two overtimes, but could not break through as it opened the season with a 0-0 tie against San Diego in Blacksburg.

Hokies goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn came up with two big stops early in the contest and made seven saves overall to register her 13th career shutout, which stands third in school history. Kristina Diana and Kelsey Irwin led the Hokies with three shots apiece. …

UNC Wilmington won 3-1 Friday at VCU in the opener for both teams, though the Rams outshot the Seahawks 12-10.

Ashley Johnson scored in the 20th and Kristen Bootes in the 67th for UNCW. VCU’s goal came from Idelys Vazquez in the 70th minute, but the Seahawks answered just 30 seconds later on Morgan Nanni’s goal.

Furman scored three first-half goals to defeat Richmond 3-1 Friday in the season opener for both teams in Greenville, S.C.

Caitlyn Reilly’s 25-yard shot in the 11th minute gave the Paladins a 1-0 lead. Amanda Baker scored in the 20th and 30th minutes. Freshman Molly Morgan scored her first collegiate goal in the second half for UR.

Women’s tennis:

William and Mary announced that this year’s annual fall-season flighted individual invitational will be branded as the inaugural Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame Classic and will be held Sept. 14-16, in conjunction with a new Hall of Fame class being inducted.

Of the teams competing, 10 finished last season in the national rankings: No. 3 North Carolina, No. 5 Georgia Tech, No. 7 Georgia, No. 12 South Carolina, No. 23 Virginia, No. 27 Wake Forest, No. 45 W&M, No. 48 Old Dominion, No. 69 Maryland and No. 74 Minnesota.

BASEBALL

International League:

Norfolk’s scheduled game at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was postponed Friday because of rain and reset for a 5:05 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.

The Tides (64-57) and RailRiders (63-58) are chasing Columbus (66-57 entering Friday) for the IL’s wild-card playoff berth. The Tides also began Friday night 3 1/2 games behind Durham in the South Division.

Also Friday, pitcher Ryan Meisinger was called up by Baltimore from Norfolk. …

The city of Worcester, Mass., and the Pawtucket Red Sox announced their intent to relocate the International League club. The Triple-A Red Sox have played in Pawtucket, R.I., since 1973.

Eastern League:

Logan Webb pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings to lead the Richmond Flying Squirrels (58-63) past Hartford 3-0 in a series opener at The Diamond.

Relievers Sam Wolff and Garrett Williams completed the shutout before 6,679 fans. Ali Castillo doubled, singled, scored a run and drove in one without making an out. Caleb Gindl and Matt Winn also drove in runs for the Squirrels.

The Yard Goats, Colorado’s Double-A affiliate, fell to 55-65.

GOLF:

Cam Young of Manakin-Sabot captured the Virginia State Golf Association Amateur championship, defeating Mark Boedicker of Great Falls 5 and 4 on the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club’s Gold Course in Williamsburg.

After qualifying in stroke play, Young beat all five of his match-play opponents. …

Jim Gallagher of Yorktown, a VSGA Senior Amateur quarterfinalist, was one stroke off the Valentine Invitational Senior Division lead with a 1-over-par 73 at Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot.

Young (honoring his commitment to his home club’s event), Steve Firkins of Chesterfield and Scott Reisenweaver of Midlothian shared the lead at 72. Newport News’ Allen Barber fired a 76.

In the championship division, Dustin Groves of Charlottesville shot 69 for a one-stroke lead over Peter Gasperini of South Boston, Jordan Utley of Midlothian and Steve Serrao of Richmond.
