David Walliams is set to bring his children's book Grandpa's Great Escape to BBC One.

The adaptation will air this Christmas, and follows the story of World War II flying veteran Grandpa, who sadly has Alzheimer's.

When he can no longer look after himself, Grandpa is moved to old people's home Twilight Towers, though with the help of his grandson Jack he tries to escape from the home and its mean boss Miss Dandy.

The adaptation has racked up a pretty impressive cast, with the likes of 45 Years' Tom Courtenay playing Grandpa and Jennifer Saunders cast as Miss Dandy.

Jack will be played by Mr Holmes' Kit Connor, while Game of Thrones and Babs star Samantha Spiro will play Jack's mum and Walliams will play his dad.

The author will adapt his book for the small screen with Kevin Cecil, having previously worked together to adapt his books Gangster Granny and Billionaire Boy.

His books Mr Stink, Gangsta Granny, The Boy in The Dress and Billionaire Boy were previously adapted in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively.

"I am thrilled to be working with acting and comedy royalty on this adaptation of my book," Britain's Got Talent star Walliams said.

"I have loved Tom Courtenay forever and I still can't believe that I am working with him. He is the perfect Grandpa. And what a treat to be working with comedy genius Jennifer Saunders again."

Jo Sargent, Executive Producer, added: "King Bert is delighted to be bringing the wonderful world of David Walliams to BBC One this Christmas with his endearing tale of Grandpa and his adventures with his grandson Jack.

"David has written another outstanding book and once again, we were thrilled to have had a stellar cast to take the characters from the page to the screen."
