WATERLOO, Iowa — The Great Lakes All-Stars — a.k.a, the Madison Mallards — made hay given their meager offensive output against the Great Plains All-Stars on Tuesday in the Northwoods League All-Star Game.

Great Lakes’ Justice Bigbie (Madison) hit two home runs to account for three runs and his Madison Mallards teammates produced two more runs on three more hits in a 5-2 win at Riverfront Stadium.

The Willmar coaching staff helmed the Great Plains All-Stars and four Stingers played in the game. Unfortunately for Stinger Polo Portela, he surrendered Bigbie’s two-run home run in the top of the first inning.

Bigbie hit a solo homer in the third, and Great Lakes’ Drew Benefield (Madison) and Drew Williams (Madison) had RBI singles in the eighth. Madison players accounted for all five Great Lakes hits, with Mallard Logan Michaels singling in the sixth.

Rochester’s Ryan Middendorf, who gave up Bigbie’s solo homer, took the loss. Wisconsin Rapids’ Neil Abbatiello got the win and Madison’s A.J. Archambo got the save.

Bismarck’s Wyatt Ulrich, a junior from St. John’s in Collegeville, had two hits and drove in one of the Great Plains’ two runs.

Portela worked the one inning, issuing a walk and Bigbie’s homer before getting out of the inning.

Stinger’s pitcher Garret Rukes worked just 1/3 of an inning, getting the final out of the fourth inning.

Willmar infielder Daniel Walsh had a hit in three trips and Stingers infielder Justin King was 0-for-2.

The Stingers are off on Wednesday and return to action against Rochester at 7:05 p.m. Thursday in Willmar.
