Proposals to demolish five homes and an office to make way for a roundabout in the centre of Ammanford have been made by Carmarthenshire County Council.

The plan to knock down the buildings - at the junction of Wind St and Tirydail Lane - was submitted to the council’s planning department for consideration on March 15 by Jonathan Fearn.

A cover letter from Neil Carpenter of Atkins, who are consulting on the project, reads: “Carmarthenshire County Council is proposing to demolish five terraced houses located south-west of the proposed roundabout and the former Careers Wales building situated to the north-west of the junction.

“The demolition work is necessary to facilitate the construction of a roundabout to replace the existing signalised crossroads at the Wind Street and Tirydail Junction.”

“The highway scheme is proposed to improve traffic flow through the junction and reduce queuing lengths at peak times.”

The application states that the work will be carried out from April 2 until May 31 and that most of the listed properties are vacant - those currently occupied by tenants are close to their end of leases which will not be renewed.

The council has found new homes for two of the three private tenants in buildings due for demolition. However, one is still without anywhere to move.

Councillor Linda Davies-Evans said: “We have been supporting tenants of private landlords and have been successful in helping secure alternative accommodation for two of them, using our partners in the private sector and other housing associations.

“We are working closely with the remaining private tenant on their options for alternative accommodation.”
