A 19-year-old Fort Carson soldier died Saturday in an ATV crash while on leave in his hometown of Ashville, Pa.

Cody "C.J." Maines was assigned Dec. 19 to the 4th Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson after enlisting June 12, Gazette news partner KKTV reported. He had received a National Defense Service Medal.

"The Stagecoach Battalion is deeply saddened by the loss of PV2 Cody Maines. Cody was relatively new to the Army but already demonstrated he was an excellent Soldier," Lt. Col. Mike Iannuccilli, 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 4th SB, 4th Inf. Div., said in a statement to KKTV. "His family has our deepest condolences following this tragic loss."

Maines had served five years with the Ashville Volunteer Fire Company. "CJ exemplified company pride, while home on leave from the service he couldn't wait to get to the firehouse, where he attended training, answered calls and even worked fundraisers," the agency said in a Facebook post.

He was thrown from the ATV he was driving and onto a driveway in Gallitzin Township, the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa., reported. He was not wearing a helmet.

"C.J. enjoyed being a firefighter, riding his four-wheeler, hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family and friends," says an obituary in The Progress, a newspaper in Clearfield, Pa. "He was an active member of the Ashville Volunteer Fire Company and a member of the Cayman Campers Club, DuBois."

He graduated from Penn Cambria High School in Cresson, Pa., in 2017, and attended the HVAC program at Admiral Peary Vocational-Technical School in Ebensburg, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggested contributions be made to the Ashville Volunteer Fire Company in his memory.
