ADGER, Alabama -- An Adger man is charged with attempted murder after authorities said he tried to run over a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy at a traffic safety checkpoint.

The deputy wasn't injured, and fired one shot at the man's vehicle, deflating his rear tire.

Deputies set up the checkpoint Thursday afternoon at Belle-Sumpter Road and Pine Circle after they received complaints of drug sales in the area, said Chief Deputy Randy Christian.

Motorist Jackie Lee Handley, 51, approached the deputies but stopped short of the checkpoint. A deputy went to his car and asked the driver for his identification and insurance documentation.

The deputy told Handley to pull behind another vehicle at the checkpoint while his identification was verified. Instead, Christian said, Handley accelerated toward another deputy standing in the roadway.

The deputy scrambled out of the way, and fired one shot into the back tire of Handley's vehicle, deflating it. Handley continued to drive off, Christian said. Deputies chased him for about a half mile before he pulled into a driveway on Pine Tree Circle.

Handley got out of his car and then fought with deputies who tried to arrest him. He was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

Christian said Handley later told deputies he had a small amount of marijuana, but had thrown it out of the window during the chase. P

He is charged with attempted murder, attempting to elude and resisting arrest. He was booked into the county jail with bond set at $42,000.
