Hamilton County leaders proud of latest TNReady test results

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Hamilton County Schools scored in the middle of the pack on the latest TNReady student growth tests.

But that is a significant improvement.

The county scored an overall 3 on a scale of 5-to-1.

And that is the system’s best showing in 5 years.

This is the first time since 2013 that the district results showed students meeting growth expectations across all subjects.

The Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS) scores test how students knowledge is growing compared to previous classes. The students are tested on literacy, math, science and social studies.

Hamilton County students tested best in Literacy at Level 5.  Their elementary and middle school students showed the best growth.  Those levels improved from a 1 to a 4 in Social Studies, despite a new, tougher test.

Math is the biggest problem area, with scores remaining at Level 1.

And High School students struggled more.

School leaders say their Future Ready Institutes this year should address that by making learning more relevant.

“The results from TVAAS this year are very encouraging and indicates our schools are trending in the right direction,” said Dr. Bryan Johnson, superintendent of Hamilton County Schools.

“Children exceeding a year’s worth of academic growth in classrooms across the district is how Hamilton County Schools will become the fastest improving school district in the state of Tennessee.”
