A Readfield woman accused of shooting her husband in May of 2017 was sentenced Thursday.
Sally Ann Costello, 62, pleaded guilty to charges of elevated aggravated assault.
In court, her husband came forward to speak on her behalf.
"Sally Ann is not a criminal," Hugh Costello. "Illness should be treated, not punished. The legal system, for more than a year, has prevented me from having any contact whatsoever with my wife. Even to tell her that I love her and forgive her. My wife acted outside of herself through an alcoholic haze."
Hugh Costello begged the judge for a lenient sentence.
The charge of elevated aggravated assault that Sally Ann Costello pleaded guilty to carries a sentence of up to 30 years.
"I've not forgiven myself but I can say without reservation that I still love him without limit," Sally Ann Costello said in court. "Neither of us statistically have a long life ahead of us, simply because of our ages. I beg the court more than anything to remove the no contact between Hugh and I."
The judge sentenced Sally Ann to 5 years in prison.
Although the judge removed the no-contact order, because of prison rules, it's unclear when the couple will get to speak face-to-face.
