Fundraiser Benefits Gwinnett Mom Who Endured Amputations

Cindy Martinez is recovering from several amputations due to flesh-eating bacteria.

-------

A fundraiser held last week in Peachtree Corners raised around $3,000 for a Gwinnett County mother who required several amputations due to flesh-eating bacteria.

The United Peachtree Corners Civic Association said on Facebook that the proceeds from the “Food and Wine Pairing to Benefit Cindy Martinez” on July 30 will go to helping the family with mounting medical bills.

Martinez has been battling the flesh-eating bacteria and its effects since late May, when she first went to the hospital with shoulder pain. It is not known how she contracted the bacteria.

In late June, Martinez had parts of her legs, an arm and fingers of the remaining hand amputated. In a Facebook update, husband David Martinez said both of Cindy’s legs were removed below the knees, her right arm above the elbow and all of the fingers on her left hand below or at the last joint.

David Martinez was on hand for the Peachtree Corners fundraiser held at the Atlanta Bread Company.

The family has received an outpouring of community support during their ordeal. Donations on GoFundMe have grown to over $94,000, and several fundraisers have been planned.
