Opening Day at the Ellington Farmers Market

Get ready for a day of farm-fueled fun at the Ellington Farmers Market opening day event: Barnyard Babies!  Local farms will be bringing adorable...

Ellington's Earth Day Celebration will occur on Saturday, April 20th from 10 am - 2 pm on the Town Green and Nellie McKnight Museum property, 70 Main St. A free, fun-filled day of entertainment, refreshments, games, activities, shopping, and learning opportunities are planned from over 75 participants. Individuals of all ages can check out local businesses, organizations, and vendors promoting practices that can make Ellington even more eco-friendly.
Residents can pick up garbage bags from Ellington Public Works to " Clean Up Your Neighborhood". A dumpster will be provided at the event to deposit the trash. Residents can also drop off, clothing and textiles, household furniture, bottles, and cans. All items can be dropped off by pulling into the drive-thru driveway at the Nellie McKnight Museum 70 Main St. Ellington Youth Services will conduct a "Vape Take Back" at their booth on the green.
Multiple food vendors along Church St. will have many options for breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
The 2024 exhibit at the Nellie McKnight Museum, <a href="https://ellingtonhistsoc.org/events/it-happened-in-ellingtonbelieve-it-or-not-lehyk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">It Happened in Ellington&hellip;Believe It or Not</a>, will be open during the Earth Day event. Under this schedule, the first election utilizing early voting will be the Presidential Preference Primary on April 2, 2024.

 Under the new law, each town must establish at least one early voting location, approved by the Secretary of the State, which is accessible to voters with physical disabilities. Municipalities with populations of at least 20,000 may offer additional locations if approved by their legislative body.
The length of the early voting period depends on the type of election:
 14 days for general elections.
 7 days for most primaries; and
 4 days for special elections and the presidential preference primary.
For all elections, early voting locations must be open from 10 am&nbsp;to 6 pm. For general elections and most primaries, the locations must be open on the last Tuesday and Thursday of the period from 8 am to 8 pm.
March 25 - Unaffiliated voters have until noon on March 25 to enroll in a party to be able to vote during early voting.

 March 26, 27, 28, 30 - Connecticut will have four days of early voting - March 26, 27, 28, and 30. The hours will be 10 am to 6 pm. Voters should check with their local town registrar&rsquo;s office for their town&rsquo;s early voting location.
April 1 - The deadline to register in person in your city or town is noon on April 1 if you want to vote on April 2. April 1 at noon is the deadline for unaffiliated voters to enroll in a party in person for voting on April 2.
April 2 - Connecticut&rsquo;s Presidential Preference Primary election will be on April 2. Polls will be open from 6 am to 8 pm.
 


 
 NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTIONS
EARLY VOTING &ndash; 14 DAY PERIOD
Connecticut will have fourteen days of early voting - October 21 - 31 and November 1-3, 10 AM &ndash; 6 PM, and 8 AM &ndash; 8 PM on October 29 and 31. Voters should check with their local town registrar&rsquo;s office for their town&rsquo;s early voting location.

Early Voting is available to every eligible voter without a specific reason. Early Voting may only be done in person, not via mail or drop box. You must provide adequate identification as if voting in person on election day.

The election official at your Early Voting location will record that you&rsquo;ve cast your ballot, preventing you from voting early at any other location, submitting an absentee ballot, or voting on Election Day.
Ballots cast during Early Voting will be sealed and stored securely in each town. They will be opened and counted on Election Day.

Support of this program has incredible power to uplift low-income seniors and WIC recipients through a unique initiative at the Ellington Farmers Market. The Ellington Farmers Market doubles the value of Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) vouchers assuring greater accessibility to fresh produce, eggs, honey, and an array of locally sourced goods that will impact the lives of vulnerable community members.
The Ellington Farmers Market relies on the community's collective support to raise every dollar necessary for operations and essential food insecurity programs. The market is a 501c3 non-profit corporation. Donations are tax-deductible.
In 2023 with the community's unwavering support, over $14,000 was distributed in vouchers to purchase healthy market foods. The Market looks to increase that distribution in 2024.

<h2>Shallow Subsidy helps homeless and at-risk Veterans struggling with housing costs</h2>
In response to the affordable housing crisis, the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program has launched the Shallow Subsidy service. 
Shallow Subsidy provides rental assistance for a set period of time to eligible and enrolled Veterans. Typically, the Shallow Subsidy service is targeted to Veterans who need longer-term assistance to achieve housing stability.
The maximum amount of rental subsidy that can be provided through Shallow Subsidy on behalf of the Veteran household is up to 50% of the lease rent.
<h2>SSVF Expands toolkit to support Veterans</h2>
SSVF usually comes in two forms: homeless prevention services for at-risk Veterans and rapid rehousing for Veterans who are literally homeless. Shallow Subsidy services are geared towards Veterans in both groups who have potentially fewer case management needs but still have a high-rent burden.
Traditional SSVF rapid re-housing and homeless prevention services are designed to be shorter term in length. They are typically between six to nine months and can pay up to 100% of the rent based on a household&rsquo;s needs. Veterans utilizing these programs are just approaching or entering the homelessness system. 
Shallow Subsidy is different from traditional rapid rehousing and homelessness prevention assistance services because of the ability to support households for a longer period (up to 24 months) in order to support housing stability. But it differs from VA&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.va.gov/homeless/hud-vash.asp" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">HUD-VASH</a> program in that the subsidy is time-limited and generally not targeted toward Veterans with multiple barriers to housing stability.
<h2>How Shallow Subsidy helps Veterans</h2>
If something were to happen and the Veteran could no longer pay their half of the rent, they will still have the cushion of traditional rapid rehousing or homeless prevention financial services from SSVF. While the Veteran household is receiving Shallow Subsidy services they remain eligible for the full commitment period regardless of any increases in their income.
Our SSVF grantees have shown that Shallow Subsidy can help prevent homelessness due to evictions and other housing crises as well as supporting formerly homeless Veterans to stay housed.
Shallow Subsidy helps Veterans get back on their feet. It reduces the stigma around getting help and provides a collaborative partnership that supports Veterans until their circumstances improve. That extra help and assistance can truly make all the difference in the lives of Veterans.<h2>How to get help.</h2>
It is important to reach out for help if you are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless:
<ul><li>You should reach out to your local SSVF grantee to help determine if you are eligible for traditional, Shallow Subsidy or other services to help find and maintain housing or prevent the loss of your current housing. </li><li>The <a href="https://www.va.gov/homeless/ssvf/index.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">SSVF website</a> is a great way to find your local grantees.</li><li>Community Solutions also has a <a href="https://community.solutions/homeless-resource-locator/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">resource locator website</a> that could help identify additional supports.
