Cuban Sandwich Cafe, the Latin restaurant in Windsor Park, is now closed, as indicated by a sign on the door posted on Yelp. Its final day was Saturday, November 11.
However, owners David and Mary are turning the Briarcliff Boulevard space into a new restaurant, a pizzeria and sandwich shop called Rocco’s Pizza and Subs. No, it doesn’t sound like the next iteration will include Cuban sandwiches. It’s expected to open in several months.
Cuban Sandwich Cafe was known for its Latin specialties, like ropa vieja, medianoches, pan con lechon, fried plantains, as well as those Cuban sandwiches. Original owner Enrique Reyes opened the restaurant sometime in 2011.
While Cuban fare isn't prevalent in Austin, the city has a couple of dedicated Cuban and Caribbean restaurants, like Cuba 512 (formerly known as Guantanamera), Tropicana Cuban Restaurant, and Habana. Pleasant Storage Room attempted to bring Caribbean food to downtown Austin in 2014, but it closed by the end of the year.
