As down-ticket Democratic candidates for Denver area races meet face-to-face Wednesday night there will be a big exception. U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette won’t be there to debate primary challenger Charles “Chuck” Norris, the Denver Young Democrats, the event’s sponsor, said Sunday.

Lisa Cohen, Degette’s chief of staff, said DeGette will send a surrogate Wednesday night and is looking for an opportunity to debate Norris in the future.

“The Denver Young Democrats are excited to host all their candidates or representatives at our Wednesday night forum, as an opportunity for young people to get to know them better,” said the organization’s president, Rebecca Sunshine.

Sixteen Democratic candidates will speak at the forum, called Singled Out, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Tavern Lowry at 7401 E. First Ave.

The forum is expected to include candidates from House districts 6 and 8, Senate districts 31 and 33, for University of Colorado regent and district attorney.

The Democratic primary is June 28.
