PHOENIX — Two Arizona firefighters were recuperating from injuries suffered when their fire truck blew a tire and rolled over on a Nevada highway this week.
A spokeswoman for the Arizona State Forestry said the firefighters from the Elephant Head Volunteer Fire Department were returning from duty battling California’s enormous Carr Fire on Monday.
The single-vehicle accident happened on U.S. Highway 95 near Hawthorne, which is 251 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
They were the only occupants of the truck and were airlifted to a hospital.
“Considering the seriousness of the accident, we are very lucky these men were able to be released from the hospital so quickly,” State Forester Jeff Whitney said Wednesday in an email.
The unidentified men were expected to make full recoveries.
“As firefighters, we are always on the road, and driving is one of the most dangerous parts of our jobs. We cannot stress driver safety enough,” Whitney said in the statement.
The Elephant Head Fire Department is in Amado, Arizona, between Tucson and Nogales along Interstate 19.
