130 students from the Kansas City area are learning more about George Washington Carver with the help of some special friends.
The field trip is sponsored by the National Park Foundation, but also the Pi Beta Sigma fraternity, which Carver was a member of. Kids walked the trails with park rangers as they learned more about Carver’s work with nature and peanuts. The fraternity was also presented with the George and Helen Hartzog Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service for their involvement in the community.
“It was fantastic seeing them be a part, giving back to the community of service and that’s the important thing. The more we serve one another the better off we are,” says Leonard Jones.
“This is a very prestigious award. They won it at the regional level and there was some pretty heavy competition for it this year, so we are just thrilled to see them recognized,” says James Heaney.
Fraternity members have worked in the community, and are also funding the field trips to the Carver National Park.
