SWAT Standoff Ends In Sugar Land When Gunman Is Found Dead: Cops

Serik Olivares, 41, allegedly threatened his family and held them hostage for several hours before taking his own life on Tuesday morning.

SUGAR LAND, TX β€” A man who shot a Fort Bend County Sheriff's deputy and held his family hostage for several hours was found dead inside the home from a self inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.

Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls said SWAT officers went into the home after the hostages were released and found 41-year-old Serik Olivares dead.

The incident began at about 5 a.m. Tuesday with a frantic disturbance call to a home in the 3700 Lakeridge Canyon in Orchard Lake Estates. Nehls said Olivares' wife called 911 and told dispatchers that her husband threatened to kill her.

Fort Bend County Deputy J. Bulman and a trainee went to the home and were immediately fired at by Olivares. Nehls said the deputies fired back, and Bulman was wounded during the exchange of gunfire.

Other deputies arrived and went into the home, and exchanged gunfire with Olivares. Nehls said the deputies retreated and took cover. Bulman was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Sugar Land and is expected to be OK.

Police learned that Olivares was holding several family members hostage, including his 2-year-old son, his wife, and his parents.

Olivares'wife eventually escaped through a back door and his father also managed to escape, police said. Several hours after the standoff began, Olivares released his son and his mother.

Nehls said SWAT tried to communicate with Olivares but he would not respond. At about 10:30 a.m., SWAT fired tear gas canisters into the home and went inside where they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident remains under investigation.
