Shaw Road Project Nearing Completion, City Says

The city will host a 'Grand Pre-Opening' event Dec. 14 to celebrate the near-completion of the $8.78 million Shaw Road improvement project.

PUYALLUP, WA β€” City officials want to celebrate the end of construction along Shaw Road with a special "Grand Pre-Opening" event in mid-December. The Shaw Road project to improve travel and reduce congestion began in April and should be completed before the end of the year, officials said.

The Shaw Road project saw a middle turn lane added between 23rd Avenue Southeast and Manorwood Drive, along with new bicycle and pedestrian paths. The improvements, city officials said, ought to relieve a great deal of congestion normally experienced along the road, which typically sees 16,000 daily vehicle trips.

Work to improve the 4,000-foot section of Shaw Road between 23rd Avenue Southeast and Manorwood Drive had been a long time coming, with preliminary work for the project beginning in 2015. The actual labor was set to begin in 2017 but was ultimately rescheduled to avoid a potential wintertime shutdown, city officials said.
